  2. 5 out of 5 Simple, Classic, Dependable, & Sturdy

I remember about 20 years ago when the Navy started issuing these to non-aviation personnel instead of the black or brown plastic rimmed BCDs. Until then you had to buy your own glasses if you wanted something that didn’t look like it was from the 1950s.

I bought a pair of the regular Aviator sunglasses about 30 years ago at the Navy Exchange just to use the frames for my prescription but I never got used to the bayonet temples so I was out about $30 for the frames and about another $100 for the lenses.

After I retired in 2005 I was needing new glasses only to find out that military retirees no longer have the eyeglasses benefit anymore so I had to reuse my very old frames, yet still functional, for another prescription.

Around 2011 I needed a new prescription and those old frames were done for, I got about six years out of them before catastrophic failure. I finally remembered that Randolph Engineering made the ones I had in the Navy so I looked them up on the internet, found the website and placed an order for two new FGN frames.

I’ve had them for six years and my daily wearers are showing severe signs of wear in the skull ear pads but the frames themselves are in perfect working order. My backup pair have never been worn other than to check the prescription so they’re brand new even though they’re six years old.

Last week I decided to buy another set of FGN frames to replace my daily wearers when I got a new prescription. My current backup is in the shop getting fitted with new lenses and will be my new daily wearers and my new frames will be my new backup pair. I’m sure to get another six years at least with these new frames without any doubt because I’ve worn them all over the world in various temperature extremes and they hold up wonderfully; I couldn’t imagine wearing anything else.

If it were possible to get new skull ear pads for my old daily wearers it would be great because it’s a shame to have to put these frames down just because the skull ear pads are falling apart.

Simply put, I couldn’t find better frames than these, they are without doubt the best money can buy and are much more affordable and better looking than those at the Optometry Shops.

I most highly recommend these frames in particular to anyone needing glasses that are simple, classic, dependable, and sturdy. With that said, I highly endorse the other RE models as well.
